Paging Jeff Sessions

Jeff SessionsJustice David Souter is retiring and Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) is no longer pretending to be a Republican. This leaves Senate Republicans with an important question: who will be the next ranking member on the Judiciary committee? This person will have the responsibility of leading Republicans in questioning President Obama’s Supreme Court nominees.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) is next in line on the committee, but he has already served and is term limited out. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is next in line, but he’s already the ranking member of the Finance committee, so he’s ineligible. Then there’s Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) but he’s in leadership so he’s ineligible. That brings us to Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) — one of the most principled Republicans in the Senate. Sessions earned a 91% score on SCF’s 2008 scorecard and was endorsed by SCF in his re-election bid last year.

Let’s hope Sessions is the next ranking Republican on Judiciary. He’s not only Specter’s rightful replacement; he’s also the best man for the job.

RedState has more on this …

Jeff Sessions, on the other hand, would field a talented team who could educate America on just who America is getting in the next Supreme Court justice . Barring something very odd and unexpected, the nominee will get confirmed. Therefore, our number one goal should be to make sure America knows who this person is and what he stands for – and you need the right people in place to make that happen.

  1. Rush stated that the Dems may have screwed themselves by getting rid of the only surefire minority vote on the judiciary committee. And, supposedly, the rules require one minority vote along with the majority in order to move a judicial candidate out to the floor. If true, that makes Sessions even more important. The wildcard is Lindsay Graham who sought the approval of the media and the liberals as a member of the gang of 14. Maybe Sessions can counsel Mr. Graham. God help us.

  2. Jeff Sessions is EXACTLY what is needed on the judiciary committee!

We sure as H*** don’t need RINO #2, Grahamnesty on it!
He’d be about as bad as the “king of RINOs”, SpectRe!

If the repubs have ANY brains, they’ll give Sessions the job!

  3. Sessions is the only man who holds the moral authority to be the judiciary ranking member.

Twenty years after Specter kept him off the court he rises to his proper place like a phoenix from the ashes. He is too much of a gentleman to gloat. So let me extol his virtue a bit.

Alabama stood tall in resistance of the TARP legislation. Both Sen. Hatch and Sen. Grassley voted for it and disqualified themselves from such an important role. The judiciary is serious business, and the position must be held by a man who understands the importance of the job. We’ve been burned too many times before, and we remember 1986.
